Urban Farmers Offer Something More Than Food

Garden Share members are getting more than vegetables when they buy a garden share from a local farmer. They are getting an experience.

They are getting high quality, fresh veggies, that didn’t come in a truck* from Mexico, or a ship from Chile. Often the veggies were harvest that day, and travelled a few kilometers.

They are getting peace of mind in knowing where they’re food is coming from and knowing the farmer personally. They often help the farmer in the growing of the food, weeding, seeding, harvesting throughout the year.

They can feel good about themselves because they are supporting the local economy. The money stays in the community, unlike the money spent at Safeway, the money the farmer makes is general spent buying stuff from other local merchants. That money, or profit is recycled again and again in the community. Safeways profit disappear into the financial markets, and have little impact on the local economy.

They are contributing to the building of a vibrant community.
Instead of going into the Mega Food Store, full of processed, package
d and refrigerated food, where no one talks to each other, and the lineups are spent gazing at the gum display, Garden Share members are visiting there neighbourhood farmer. Often they arrive on a bike, or walking, with kids and dog, and they meet people, the kids play with each other, it’s all outside in the fresh air and sunshine. The harvest is on display and members gather their share.
